Hospice of Kitsap County celebrates opening of new 15- Room Inpatient Hospice Care Center:  Increasing Access to Quality End-of-Life Care

Kitsap County now has increased access to quality end-of-life care with Hospice of Kitsap County's Care Center.  The Care Center opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony April 17, 2008 and began serving patients and their families on May 1, 2008.

Hospice of Kitsap County's Care Center is a new and important option for dying individuals who cannot be cared for at home, providing a level of care that is so important during the last days, weeks, or months of life. At this time when illness is most acute, the Care Center setting allows staff to assist individuals around the clock, controlling pain and other symptoms, while also attending to loved ones’ needs for support and information. The Hospice Care Center is quite different from any health care facility. The building has been designed to create a peaceful, homelike feel. Private rooms are large enough to allow family members to stay overnight; kitchen areas are available so that families can prepare food for themselves or their loved ones, if they wish. The Care Center also features a chapel/meditation room, private family counseling areas, and beautiful outdoor areas.

"It's part of our mission to make quality hospice care available to all who need it. This is one more way of doing that," said Hospice of Kitsap County Executive Director, Jim Pledger.  "It's important as a society that we embrace the aging population and provide helpful services such as hospice care. Hospice of Kitsap County is on a mission to provide the best possible hospice service. "

While providing care in the home has always been, and will continue to be, the main focus of Hospice of Kitsap County, we are excited to be able to fulfill such a large need in our community with its first Hospice Care Center. Before now, those who needed end-of-life care outside the home setting had limited options. These individuals have intensive needs for emotional and spiritual support, as well as for medical and nursing care; the Hospice Care Center is specifically designed for these purposes.

Thanks to the generosity of our community, this Care Center will have an impact on our community's families for generations to come.
